The supported browsers for this site are Internet Explorer 6+, Netscape Navigator 6+, Mozilla 1.7+, Firefox 1+ for Windows, and Safari 1.2+ for the Macintosh. Other browsers may work, but total functionality is not guaranteed in those cases.
Macromedia's Flash Player (version 6+) is required to load the viewer.
JavaScript should also be enabled in your browser.
Navigation
There are four ways to interact with the viewer image:
| Button Navigation |
Zooming Buttons |
Manual Navigation |
Keyboard Navigation |
In addition to navigating with the given toolbar buttons, you can do the following:
1) Drag the image with your mouse cursor. Clicking anywhere on the image will allow you to zoom in on more specific features.
Note: the above is only true for non-full-screen mode.
2) Use your keyboard. Refer to the Keyboard Navigation section of this documentation for a listing of the keys you can use.
Pressing the Reset button will return the image to its initial position and zoom.
Use the the locator window in the top left of the viewer to jump to a particular area of the scroll by dragging the red box outline:

Auto Scrolling
Pressing the Auto Scroll button will present you with the option to automatically scroll in a certain direction. Choose the direction by clicking on the corresponding arrow button. This will set the image in motion continously. All button, keyboard and mouse navigation remains active during this scrolling (allowing you to zoom in and out while it moves, for instance). If auto-scrolling is active, the Stop Scroll button will be made available.
To stop scrolling at any point, simply click on the Stop Scroll button.
Comparing Scrolls
The Compare button will allow you to view any two scrolls of like layout simultaneously. Pressing the button will load a list of all available scrolls: Choose the scroll you would like to compare the base scroll with and click "Compare."
Hotspot Notes
If the scroll you are viewing has hotspot notes, a Show Hotspots button will appear. Clicking on this button will display all hotspots associated with the scroll. Clicking on the hotspot label will 1) open a new window containing the hotspot note, and 2) re-adjust the viewer to the view and zoom of the target area.
Full Screen Navigation
After clicking on the Full Screen button, your browser should resize to fit the entire screen. An enlarged version of the scroll image will then be loaded. You will be presented with a new toolbar. This toolbar is draggable, and you can move it to any position by pressing and holding the hand icon
.
After a few seconds of inactivity, the toolbar will hide (moving your mouse will make it reappear). It's also useful to note that the toolbar will remain hidden during keyboard navigation.
To exit full screen mode and return to normal view, click the red close button on the right-hand side of the toolbar.
You can toggle the visibility of hotspot notes by pressing the "Show Hotspots" button at the top right-hand corner of the screen.
Keyboard Navigation
The following keys allow you to interact with the image in place of the toolbar buttons:
A - Zoom in
Z - Zoom out
CTRL - Hide/Show Locator and Information (full-screen mode) components
ESC - Exit Full Screen mode
Spacebar - Deactivate auto-hiding of toolbar (full screen mode only)
Left arrow - Move image left
Up Arrow - Move image up
Down Arrow - Move image down
Right Arrow - Move image right
Problems
Only part of the image loads
- If you can see an image, but it appears blurred or partially loaded, you may need to wait a few seconds while it downloads the remaining sub-images from the server.
- If certain "blocks" on the image appear to be taking longer than they should to load, try clicking on one or more of the arrow buttons (or pressing the arrow keys) until the image is fully loaded.
- If the entire view is blurred for more than a minute (or two, if on a slower connection), then try reloading your browser [CTRL+R].
When I press a key (e.g. "A" to zoom), nothing happens
Due to certain limitations with Macromedia's Flash Player, you must "wake up" or "focus" the viewer before it knows to listen for your keystrokes. The simplest way to do this is by clicking anywhere on the viewer (including the toolbar buttons).
When I press the "Full screen" button, nothing happens
If JavaScript is enabled, then your browser or ad-blocking software may be blocking pop-up windows. If you are presented with the following warning in Internet Explorer:

then click on it and select "Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site" as shown below:

The window opens for full screen mode, but it's blank
Try reloading (CTRL+R), or exiting full-screen and trying again. If this does not work, please let us know.
The loading bar in Netscape/Mozilla never stops loading
This is a known issue which should not affect your viewing.
Auto-scrolling is slow or jittery
Auto-scrolling is CPU intensive--so the faster your computer, the smoother auto-scrolling will be.
